Dr. Ted Auch, PhD, FaCT Vice-President
Former longtime FaCT board member John Elder was instrumental in securing amazing and diverse speakers for our annual meetings and periodic Zoom gatherings during COVID.
Unfortunately John is no longer able to act in this role but FactOhio will carry forward John’s legacy with a Speaker Series highlighting important research, books, and topics relevant to the FaCT network. Our goal is to have 4-5 speakers each year. Presentations will range from Dan Flores’ thoughts on the Great Plains and the epic story of anmals and people in America to Adrienne Buller on the limits of privatized climate policy and green capitalism.
We are excited to announce that we will be kicking off this speaker series with a reading and Q&A by author Paul Bogard. Paul pent time here in Ohio researching his latest book “The Ground Beneath Us: From the Oldest Cities to the Last Wilderness, What Dirt Tells Us About Who We Are, described as a “insightful, wide-ranging, but mostly painful chronicle of our relations with terra firma.” Paul is also the author of The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light, which was shortlisted for the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award.
Paul is editor of the forthcoming Solastalgia: An Anthology of Emotion in a Disappearing World, author of the children’s picture book What If Night?, and author of the coffee-table book To Know a Starry Night. He is editor of the anthology Let There Be Night: Testimony on Behalf of the Dark. His articles and essays have appeared in The New York Times, Slate, Salon, Los Angeles Times, Outside, Audubon, Conservation, Reader’s Digest, National Geographic, Creative Nonfiction, and elsewhere.
A native Minnesotan, Paul grew up exploring the forest and watching the stars near a lake in the northern part of the state. He has lived and taught in New Mexico, Nevada, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Virginia, and is now associate professor of English and Environmental Studies at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Please join us on March 5 at 3pm for our online opening discussion in the FactOhio Speaker Series.
